Aims
- To showcase the alternative/gothic lifestyle in Edinburgh through visual mapping and collages
Why I chose this method (describe suitability)
Having known many venues that cater to people attracted to the alternative/gothic subculture, I located the best venues for gothic tourists. This data would hypothetically be used for a tourist app to attract Goths to Edinburgh. It would also give Edinburgh a better claim as a gothic hotspot to host events during World Goth Day (May 22) and Halloween, like in Whitby, England.
What I did (include images)

How I did it (detailed account)
From my past experience as an alternative/gothic person living and touring Edinburgh, I constructed a hypothetical map of Edinburgh, pinpointing the best venues, like Frankenstein’s Pub, The Banshee Labyrinth and Legends (Opium). I categorised them by venues, bars/clubs, clothes shops and tourist attractions.
I also constructed a collage of four of the best gothic venues in Edinburgh and took note of the aesthetics, the decor and the lighting that accompany their environments.
Findings
- Sadly there were many alternatives fashion shops closed down due to the Covid-19 pandemic and many shoppers resort to travel to Glasgow or order clothes online.
- The best venues and bars are located in or around Cowgate.
