The aim for my collaboration project is to design a campaign to positively promote polyamorous and non-monogamous relationships. This campaign could use motion graphics to promote inclusivity, address bias and tackle the heteronormativity in society and design. Polyamory is often unfairly stereotyped as a cheating spouse having multiple affairs in secret, whereas the true extent of this lifestyle revolves around consent from all parties involved in these relationships.
The campaign could require posters and motion graphics designed on Adobe Illustrator and After Effects, respectively. This campaign may also include interviews from anyone in Edinburgh or Scotland that are actively in open relationships that may be asked how society could improve their attitude towards this lifestyle as they have for LGBTQIA+ issues in recent years.
I propose to work with charities and organisations that promote LGBTQIA+ issues, such as the Napier LGBTQIA+ Society (or Queer Napier), as they would have better experience and expertise in developing campaigns to challenge the normative stereotypes in sexuality and gender. While polyamorous relationships are not limited to homosexual, heterosexual or bisexual relationships, it is a subject outside of the heteronormativity in the common society. This project is open to organisations within Edinburgh or Scotland like LGBT Health and Wellbeing and Pride Edinburgh. Another organisation I am willing to work with is The Equality Network, a registered Scottish charity that previously worked with a collaboration project that covered similar issues.
My approach is to produce a glossary on terms related to polyamory and non-monogamous relationships. I would also include a glossary on the different sexualities and genders to prove my knowledge on different LGBTQIA+ subjects. Using the terms I collected, I chose the ones necessary for the project (i.e. polyamory terms) to illustrate or produce representational hieroglyphics.
I plan to meet with Tim Hopkins of Equality Network in the early stages of the project. Hopkins has experience in campaigning awareness of the LGBTQIA+ society, so he could offer advice in designing the campaign to positively promote the message. Once the initial meeting has been undertaken, a schedule revolving them would be put in better detail.
